7 Signs It's Time to Hire an Interior Designer

Most people don't wake up one day and decide "I need an interior designer." It builds gradually — a room that's never quite felt finished, a renovation that stalled out at paint colors, a Pinterest board with two hundred pins and no clear direction. If you're reading this, there's a decent chance you're already closer to needing one than you think.

Here are the signs I hear most often from clients, right before they reach out.

1. You've Redecorated the Same Room Twice and It Still Doesn't Feel Right

If you've bought new furniture, tried a different layout, changed the paint color — and the room still doesn't feel finished — that's usually not a shopping problem. It's a planning problem. A room that doesn't work often has an issue with scale, flow, or function that no amount of new furniture will fix on its own.

2. You Have a Pinterest Board, But No Plan

Inspiration isn't the same as direction. A lot of people come to me with hundreds of saved images and no clear sense of how to turn them into an actual room — because the photos they love don't always work together, or don't work in their specific space. If your inspiration folder keeps growing but nothing's getting decided, that's a strong sign you need someone to translate taste into a plan.

3. You're About to Spend Real Money and Don't Want to Get It Wrong

Big purchases — a sofa, a renovation, a full room refresh — are expensive to get wrong. If you're about to commit real budget to a space and feel unsure whether your choices will actually work together once they're all in the room, that hesitation is worth listening to. A second set of trained eyes before you buy is almost always cheaper than fixing it after.

4. Your Home Doesn't Match How You Actually Live Now

Life changes — a new baby, a work-from-home shift, kids who've grown up and moved out, a remarriage that merges two households. Homes often don't keep up. If your space still reflects an old version of your life instead of your current one, that's less about decorating and more about redesigning how the home functions.

5. You're Renovating and Don't Want a Series of Disconnected Decisions

Renovations involve dozens of individual choices — cabinetry, tile, lighting, hardware, paint — often made under time pressure, room by room. Without someone holding the full picture, it's easy to end up with a home that's technically finished but doesn't feel cohesive. If you're mid-renovation and starting to worry the pieces won't come together, that's exactly the moment to bring a designer in.

6. You Know What You Don't Like, But Not What You Do

This one comes up constantly. Clients can tell me instantly what they hate about their current space, but struggle to articulate what they actually want instead. That's completely normal — it's not your job to have design language for it. It is a designer's job to translate "I don't love this" into an actual direction.

7. You Just Want Someone Else to Handle It

Sometimes the sign isn't about the design at all — it's about bandwidth. Sourcing furniture, comparing options, coordinating deliveries, and making a hundred small decisions takes real time. If you have the budget but not the time or interest in managing all of that yourself, that alone is a completely valid reason to bring in a designer.

If Any of These Sound Familiar

None of these signs mean something's wrong with your home or your taste — they just mean you've hit the point where more effort on your own isn't going to move things forward the way a second, trained perspective will.

If you're seeing yourself in two or three of these, that's usually the moment my clients decide to reach out. I'd rather have that conversation with you now than have you spend another year redecorating the same room.

Interiors by CK works with homeowners throughout Santa Monica, Pacific Palisades, and the Westside. If any of this sounds like where you're at, let's talk about your space.
