How to Make a Rental Feel Like Home While You Rebuild
When you lose a home, the place you land next matters more than most people expect. Many Palisades families are living in rentals while their new homes are designed and built. For many, that is a long stretch in a space that was never meant to be theirs.
A temporary house can still feel steady and warm. Here is how I approach it with my clients.
Start with the rooms you use most
Begin with the bedroom and the place where your family gathers at the end of the day. A good mattress and soft bedding will do more for you than a fully styled living room. So will a lamp with warm light beside the bed. Those two rooms set the tone for everything else.
Bring in a few things that feel like you
Rentals tend to feel anonymous. A piece of art you love can change how a room feels the moment you walk in. So can a stack of your favorite books on the coffee table. If anything was saved from your home, give it a place of honor where you will see it every day.
Choose pieces that can move with you
Anything you buy now should earn a place in your next home. I guide clients toward quality furniture with timeless lines that will work in the rental and in the rebuild. That way the money you spend today becomes part of the home you are building.
Use rugs and lighting to soften the space
Most rentals come with bare floors and bright overhead lights. A well-sized rug grounds a room and quiets it. Table and floor lamps let you turn off the ceiling lights in the evening, and any space feels calmer for it.
Let someone else carry the details
You are already managing so much. Furnishing a rental should not become another full-time job. This is the kind of work I do for my clients. I source the pieces and coordinate delivery. Then I set up the home so you can walk in and rest.
